About me

I practise psychology to help people feel better in mind and body, so they can do more of the things that make their life meaningful.

My areas of expertise involve two separate but interwoven threads:

  • health psychology

  • sport psychology

Health Psychology

I have clinical training in the interaction between physical and mental well-being. I have practised this work within the public health (DHB) system working with people with chronic pain, admitted to the intensive care unit, and adjusting to spinal cord injuries. More recently, I have worked for the Cancer Society, supporting people undergoing, or getting back into their lives after, treatment.

I often hear people say that, after going through a significant health event, they do not feel like their normal selves. Sometimes they feel on edge and can’t shift a feeling of anxiety. Other times they feel down for no clear reason. All told, often the mental impact of a health event can be bigger than expected.

My aim is to help you make sense of what you have been through.

And to support you to try new ways of thinking, feeling and being that are in line with a meaningful future.

I have spent a lifetime competing as an athlete - nationally at football, internationally in croquet, and dabbling in other sports such as boxing and middle-distance running. This experience, combined with psychology knowledge, has equipped me to help athletes and sports teams from the grassroots to international level with performance enhancement and recovery from injury.

Most commonly athletes seek input because they have a sense that their performances are not reflecting the physical skills that they have. Often I’ll hear athlete’s say they are never sure how well they will perform on a given day. Or that they perform better in practice than in competition. This is particularly common after injury.

Sport Psychology

Looking at the mental side of performance can help your mind and body work together in order to perform as well as you know you can.
